Beginners Guide To Squash

Squash burns twice the calories per hour that tennis does, it provides a balanced all round work out, and is much easier to learn than tennis.  Squash is played in over one hundred countries around the world. 

  • Players can burn off up to 1000 calories per hour of squash – much higher than most other sports.

 The basics:

  • Basic principle keep hitting the ball against the front wall until your opponent cannot return it
  • The ball must hit the front wall between the service line and the out line, and land in the area behind the short line on the opposite side of the court.
  • For the remainder of the rally, players must hit the wall above the board (tin) and below the out line.
  • Ball may only hit the floor once before each shot, but it can hit as many walls as the player wants.

s conveniently located in Northern New Jersey, about 25 minutes by car from Newark Airport, 20 minutes from Exit 142 of the Garden State Parkway, and 8 minutes from Morristown.  From Garden State Parkway South
Exit 142 onto IS 78 West. As road divides, stay right (local lanes), taking Route 24 West. (see directions From Route 24 West below).  From Garden State Parkway North

Exit 142 onto IS 78 East. Take first exit and u-turn onto IS 78 West. As road divides, stay right (local lanes), taking Rt 24 West. (see directions from From Route 24 West below). From NJ Turnpike

Exit 14 (Newark Airport). After the toll, take IS 78 West. In about 5 miles, the road divides. Stay right (local lanes), taking Route 24 West. (see directions From Route 24 West below)

From Route 24 West
About one mile after Rt. 24 divides from IS 78, take exit 7B-A (River Road, Summit, Chatham) then take Exit 7B (River Road, Summit). In about one mile, go through first light (Novartis on left corner), bearing right over bridge onto Watchung Avenue. Continue aprrox 3 miles or 7 lights. (Note: at 3rd light, Watchung Avenue becomes Shunpike Road). At 7th light,turn left onto Southern Blvd. (Note Getty and Gulf stations) The Chatham Club is 1/4 mile on left.

From IS 287 Northbound
Follow IS 287 North to the first Morristown exit (Exit 31 - South Street and Madison Ave.) At the light at the end of the ramp turn right onto South Street.Almost immediately, turn left onto Woodland Avenue. Go about 3 miles to the second light (Green Village Rd.) and turn right. Proceed about 1/2 mile to the next light (intersection of Green Village Rd. and Shunpike Rd., note Getty and Texaco stations). Continue through this intersection as Green Village Rd. becomes Southern Blvd. The Chatham Club is 1/4 mile on left.From IS 287 Southbound

Take IS 287 South to second Morristown exit (Exit 35). Stay to the right on the ramp and merge into Route 24 West. Get into the left lane immediately. At light, turn left onto South Street. Proceed over IS 287 and through next light. Approximately 150 ft. past the light, make a left onto Woodland Avenue. Go about 3 miles to the second light (Green Village Rd.) and turn right. Proceed about 1/2 mile to the next light (intersection of Green Village Rd. and Shunpike Rd., note Texaco and Getty stations). Continue through this intersection as Green Village Rd. becomes Southern Blvd. The Chatham Club is 1/4 mile on left.From JFK Parkway

Take JFK Parkway South. At the Short Hills Mall (Rt 24 intersection), follow signs to Summit/River Road. Go through second light (note Novartis on left corner), bearing right onto Watchung Avenue. Continue to the 9th light (3 miles from Novartis). (Note:at 4th light, Watchung Avenue becomes Shunpike Road).At 9th light,turn left onto Southern Blvd. (Note Getty and Texaco stations) The Chatham Club is 1/4 mile on left.
